The opening works as a introduction
for the film in that it introduces the character of the killer John Doe and gives clues at the story. In 2minutes, the Director set the tone and atmosphere of Se7en as the disturbing and dreadful experience that it is. Se7en is a psychological thriller with horror and neo-noir elements that eventually makes the film unique and unforgettable. The opening sequence is a collection of around 60-70 extreme close-ups that
works like a montage. This serves to intrigue the audience with tiny
detail and, to distance the audience by not showing any wider shots that
would give a better view of characters.
The used is a remix of Nine InchNails Closer . Nine Inch Nails is an American
industrial rock project which is associated with dark and gruesome imagery.
The name of the band gives it a very gothic brutal image in your mind, which
also gives hints towards the genre. The music is gritty and reflects the overall disturbing tone of
the film.
